Let’s Gab About: Six of Crows (book review)

page-break-1Let’s Gab:

Six of Crows has been such a buzz book for ever since it’s release back in September. I only just recently read it, despite not having read any of Leigh’s other books! It’s set in the same world as the Grisha Trilogy, but not having read those did not detract from my enjoyment of this one. 🙂

First of all, this book is beautiful. I super adore the black edging of the pages, it adds to the whole feeling of the book. The cover is gorgeous too, I just love how the city is part of the feathers of the crow’s wing its just- ugh so pretty.

I’m just going to say that I really, really enjoyed the read. There were a ton of characters, but I liked getting to know each one. I read this as an audiobook, so I really liked how different chapters/characters had different narrators. The multitude of characters added complexity to the story, and ultimately made it a richer reading experience! I loved Kaz and Inej the most, though, I think. Especially Inej. I really loved how the characters were so dynamic and complex and how they all go through heaps of growth in the story.

The world was incredibly imaginative- I felt completely immersed in the world of the Kaz and co. The story had darker elements that I totally adored. I think she does a great job at creating a world that is so complex and interesting, while also making it accessible and not intimidating at all.

The plot itself was so well woven and perfectly paced. I never really fell out of the rhythm of the story, even during lengthy action portions (which is something I tend to do). I was invested in the loves of the characters, and always wanted to know what would happen next. The plot moved along without ever feeling rushed, which I noticed and appreciated!

Overall impression:

I didn’t fall in love with this story like I had hoped, but I did really, really enjoy it! All of the characters were so unique and dynamic, and I especially loved Inej. I felt that the world building was well-done, and the story was perfectly paced. I ended it feeling like I had still wanted…more. Like it didn’t fully live up to my expectations, but I think I will get the more than I am looking for in the next book! Overall a very well done start to a series. I will definitely continue on as soon as the next book comes out!

Came back from Disneyland to my hold for THE SUNBE Came back from Disneyland to my hold for THE SUNBEARER TRIALS by @aidenschmaiden in my mailbox at the library 🥳🤩 I’m so excited to dive in. “Welcome to The Sunbearer Trials, where teen semidioses compete in a series of challenges with the highest of stakes, in this electric new Mexican-inspired fantasy from Aiden Thomas, the New York Times bestselling author of Cemetery Boys.

"Only the most powerful and honorable semidioses get chosen. I'm just a Jade. I'm not a real hero."

As each new decade begins, the sun's power must be replenished so that Sol can keep traveling along the sky and keep the evil Obsidian gods at bay. Ten semidioses between the ages of thirteen and eighteen are selected by Sol themself as the most worthy to compete in the Sunbearer Trials. The winner carries light and life to all the temples of Reino del Sol, but the loser has the greatest honor of all - they will be sacrificed to Sol, their body forming the new Sun Stones that will protect the people of Reino del Sol for the next ten years.

Teo, a 17-year-old Jade semidios and the trans son of Quetzal, goddess of birds, has never worried about the Trials... or rather, he's only worried for others. His best friend Niya - daughter of Tierra, the god of earth - is one of the strongest heroes of their generation and is much too likely to be chosen this year. He also can't help but worry (reluctantly, and under protest) for Aurelio, a powerful Gold semidios and Teo's friend-turned-rival who is a shoo-in for the Trials. Teo wouldn't mind taking Aurelio down a notch or two, but a one-in-ten chance of death is a bit too close for Teo's taste.

But then, for the first time in over a century, Sol chooses a semidios who isn't a Gold. In fact, they choose two: Xio, the 13-year-old child of Mala Suerte, god of bad luck, and... Teo. Now they must compete in five mysterious trials, against opponents who are both more powerful and better trained, for fame, glory, and their own survival.”
