DSC_0865.jpg“When magic has gone from the world, and a vicious king rules from his throne of glass, an assassin comes to the castle. She does not come to kill, but to win her freedom. If she can defeat twenty-three killers, thieves, and warriors in a competition to find the greatest assassin in the land, she will become the King’s Champion and be released from prison.

Her name is Celaena Sardothien.

The Crown Prince will provoke her. The Captain of the Guard will protect her.

And a princess from a foreign land will become the one thing Celaena never thought she’d have again: a friend.

But something evil dwells in the castle—and it’s there to kill. When her competitors start dying, horribly, one by one, Celaena’s fight for freedom becomes a fight for survival—and a desperate quest to root out the source of the evil before it destroys her world.”

Gabi gabs about this book page break

Yes, yes. I know. I am VERY late to the party with this one. The YA world simply cannot stop gushing about this series! There is a TON of hype around these novels, but I have found that it is for good reason!

Earlier this year, the fourth book in the series was published, and it was just about the only thing booktubers/bloggers/lovers etc. were talking about! I ended up picking up the whole series (so far) late this summer, and November felt like the perfect time to finally pick them up!

And honestly, it was so good. I loved it, and couldn’t put it down even when I had SO many other things I should have been working on. I was swept up into the world of palace politics, romance, action, and magic.

Some highlights/thoughts that I have after finishing Throne of Glass

♥ Celaena Sardothian: What a badass, wow. Celaena is a spitfire assassin who has endured much in her life, but has not let it break her spirit, or rid her of her sass. She is strong-willed and stubborn, to a fault at times, but damn is it good to read from a female character like that. I love flawed characters, so Celaena is one I just can’t get enough of! A little annoying in the beginning, but the longer we read from her perspective and the more developed her character gets, I just lover her more and more.

♥ Chaol: I love him, so so so so so so much. He’s the Captain of the Guard, and her trainer during the competition to be the King’s Champion. He is just so strong, quiet, and fiercely loyal. *Swoon*

♥ Nehemia: She is the beloved Princess of Eyllwe, supporter of the rebels, and overall just a fascinating character. I love the friendship between her and Celaena.

♥ Prince Dorian: He is just a sweetheart. I love the growth we see in him throughout this book, and I am thankful that the heir to the throne is so much better of a person than the currently evil, disgusting King of Adarlan.

♥ The world of Erilea: I think Sarah J. Maas does a wonderful job at creating and developing a complex world in this book. I enjoying learning more about the people that dwell in each area as the story goes on! You know a book is going to be interesting when it begins with a map. There is great world building going on here.

♥ Maas’ writing: Sarah is a fantastic writer. Her words leave you with a strong sense of the emotions she is trying to convey, and I really enjoy that.

Overall impression page break

I would highly recommend this epic fantasy series! It’s perfect for fans of Game of Thrones, Harry Potter, Tamora Pierce and The Mortal Instruments.

I found myself immediately swept up into this world, and highly invested in the lives of Celaena, Dorian, and Chaol right away. The characters, main and side, are well developed, multi-layered, and unique. Celaena is such a badass, and an incredibly strong female lead. The romance is incredibly well-written, as is the entire book. This story has it all: the politics of a royal court, romance, action, magic, and mystery. Sarah J. Maas does a fantastic job of keeping her readers on the edge of their seats!

Overall rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars!

Came back from Disneyland to my hold for THE SUNBE Came back from Disneyland to my hold for THE SUNBEARER TRIALS by @aidenschmaiden in my mailbox at the library 🥳🤩 I’m so excited to dive in. “Welcome to The Sunbearer Trials, where teen semidioses compete in a series of challenges with the highest of stakes, in this electric new Mexican-inspired fantasy from Aiden Thomas, the New York Times bestselling author of Cemetery Boys.

"Only the most powerful and honorable semidioses get chosen. I'm just a Jade. I'm not a real hero."

As each new decade begins, the sun's power must be replenished so that Sol can keep traveling along the sky and keep the evil Obsidian gods at bay. Ten semidioses between the ages of thirteen and eighteen are selected by Sol themself as the most worthy to compete in the Sunbearer Trials. The winner carries light and life to all the temples of Reino del Sol, but the loser has the greatest honor of all - they will be sacrificed to Sol, their body forming the new Sun Stones that will protect the people of Reino del Sol for the next ten years.

Teo, a 17-year-old Jade semidios and the trans son of Quetzal, goddess of birds, has never worried about the Trials... or rather, he's only worried for others. His best friend Niya - daughter of Tierra, the god of earth - is one of the strongest heroes of their generation and is much too likely to be chosen this year. He also can't help but worry (reluctantly, and under protest) for Aurelio, a powerful Gold semidios and Teo's friend-turned-rival who is a shoo-in for the Trials. Teo wouldn't mind taking Aurelio down a notch or two, but a one-in-ten chance of death is a bit too close for Teo's taste.

But then, for the first time in over a century, Sol chooses a semidios who isn't a Gold. In fact, they choose two: Xio, the 13-year-old child of Mala Suerte, god of bad luck, and... Teo. Now they must compete in five mysterious trials, against opponents who are both more powerful and better trained, for fame, glory, and their own survival.”
