Top Ten Tuesday: fairy tale retellings!

Top Ten Tuesday is a bookish meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish!

This week is a freebie! I chose to talk about fairy tale retellings because I LOVE FAIRY TALES. The realm of Faerie. all of it.

I have just always adored stories about wonder and magical places and mystical beings. I even took a class last year in college about fairy tales (it’s one of my favorite classes ever).

So I started thinking about my favorite retellings/books inspired by fairy tales, only to realize that I haven’t read as many YA retellings as I thought I had (I read a lot of original / classic fairy tales though).

SO, I thought I would split it into my top 5 favorites and my top 5 TBRs.

Top 5 I love:

Winter

Throne of Glass
A Court of Thorns and Roses

  1. The Lunar Chronicles – Marissa Meyer (multiple)
    • This series is hands down one of my favorites. It is SO well done, and I just adore it so much. Marissa Meyer is fantastic (and local!!).
  2. Uprooted – Naomi Novik (loosly inspired by polish fairy tales)
    • Uprooted is a wonderfully complete and intricately woven fantasy novel that is loosely based on polish fairy tales. Its fantastic, and I think you should totally read it if you haven’t already!
  3. A Court of Thorns and Roses – Sarah J. Maas (Beauty and the Beast)
    • ACOTAR is amazing. Swoon-y romance, incredible story telling, complex world buidling. Seriously, love it. SJMaas is perf.
  4. Spinning Starlight – R. C. Lewis (Hans Christian Andersen’s The Wild Swans)
    • SUCH a good story! I love HCA’s tales, and I adored this retelling. Futuristic sci-fi fairy tales are apparently things I’m a big fan of, and this was no exception.
  5. Throne of Glass – Sarah J. Maas (inspired by Cinderella)
    • So I don’t know if this counts, but TOG did begin as a cinderella retelling, but has definitely evolved since then. But I’m saying it counts, haha. I’m sure you’ve heard a million and one good things about the TOG series- they’re all true. ♥

Top 5 I want to read:

The Forbidden Wish
The Wrath and the Dawn
Cruel Beauty

Stitching Snow
Heartless

  1. Heartless – Marissa Meyer (Alice in Wonderland !!!!!)
  2. Cruel Beauty  – Rosamund Hodge (Beauty and the Beast)
  3. The Wrath and the Dawn – Renee Ahdieh (A Thousand and One Nights)
  4. The Forbidden Wish – Jessica Khoury
  5. Stitching Snow – R. C. Lewis

Do you love any of my favorites too? Have you read any on my TBR (thoughts?)? Let’s talk about fairy tales!

Fun topic choice! I haven’t read any of your choices, but one of my favorite fairy tale retellings is Beastly, by Alex Finn:)

I just got SO excited reading this post!! Haha. I LOVE fairytale retellings, and so many of the ones on there I love and the others are all on my TBR list – I NEEDSSSS them! Sadly I really didn’t like Uprooted, and Cinder was alright for me but I’m still really excited to start reading my copy of Scarlet! Obviously I LOVE ACOTAR and TOG (can the next books just come out already please) haha. Cruel Beauty and The Wrath & The Dawn are both really amazing books, they are some of my all-time favourites and I’d highly recommend them! 😀 Great post!

haha yay I’m so happy other people get as excited about fairy tales as I do!! 🙂 I know the feeling of NEEDING the retellings I haven’t read yet.

I’m surprised you didn’t like Uprooted! I found it so interesting! But I can totally see not loving Cinder, I think the series definitely grew on me more and more with every book!
and omg yes I am so not patiently waiting for the next TOG and ACOTAR books.

I just bought Cruel Beauty!! I think I am going to read it soon, especially knowing it’s one of your all-time favorites!! Probably The Wrath and The Dawn too, but I don’t own that one yet!

Thanks for fangirling over fairy tales with me!! haha 🙂

Okay wow! I have no idea ToG was based from Cinderella! It feels like a completely different story! I haven’t read the other books, but I’m glad you enjoyed them 😀

Yeah! Or at least it began as a retelling and was somewhat reworked after that, but definitely had a cinderella inspiration!
